Parks & Recreation

In 1998, as part of the Village of Edgar's Centennial Celebration, a proclamation was prepared, declaring Edgar to be "The Village of Parks." The Village has a well-established community-wide system of parks and recreational facilities which serves residents on a year-round basis. The community recognizes the need to conserve, protect and beautify the natural resources of the Village.

Recreation Facilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Park 1
Park 2
Park 3
Park 4
Park 5

Village Parks are available for reservations by contacting the Village Hall at 715-352-2891.

The park facilities include a shelter, restrooms and changing area, grills, picnic tables, children's playground equipment, grass volleyball court, and walking/jogging trails. A 1.75 acre pond with a sand beach has been developed for swimming. The other ponds have fish planted in them.

Shortner Athletic Park

.

Located on the south bank of Scotch Creek, just east of Third Avenue (Cty Hwy H or “Main Street”).

This park has been improved over the years with funds designated by the Shortner Family for this type of facility. Frank, Lucy, and Anna Shortner, along with their parents were residents Edgar, shortly after Edgar was incorporated in 1898. The three siblings remained single and childless. Frank served as Village President for two terms in the late 1920s and early 1930s. When the last of the siblings, Lucy Shortner, passed away, she chose to leave their estate to be used for projects that would benefit the youth of the area. The park was named in their honor.

Today, you will find a three-hoop, lighted blacktop basketball court, a soccer field, as well as a sandbox for the younger set. Additional playground toys for young children have been ordered with funds from the Shortner Family Trust, and was installed the summer of 2006.

A restroom facility (with flushing toilets) was completed in the summer of 2005. The Edgar Soccer League uses the soccer field nightly during the early summer months and on many warm evenings you can see action on the basketball courts.

Scotch Creek Park

This one acre park is located on the north bank of Scotch Creek, just west of Third Avenue (Cty H, "Main" Street). Facilities include a shelter with picnic tables, sand volleyball court, tetherball and playground equipment. During the cold winter months, this park provides a choice of two ice skating rinks.
