Earlier this spring, a boulevard tree, adjacent to 311 N. Third Avenue was scheduled for removal. The bark had been falling off for several years, the roots were girdling the base of the tree, the sidewalk was interfering with it's health, and other trees were fighting the tree for space to grow. The silver maple also showed signs of a split which oozed sap. T & E Tree surgery was hired by the Village to remove the tree, as the branches extended into power lines and over Highway H. They left a "stump" about 9 feet tall. Rib Falls residents Brock Jansen and his wife, Theresa, noticed the "stump" on a drive through Edgar. They contacted the homeowners, who contacted Village staff, to ask about the possibility of carving a unique sculpture into the base of the tree. Removal of the "stump" has been cancelled, and Brock will begin the carving in his 'spare time' as soon as it fits into his schedule. We hope to update this area with pictures of the on-going sculpting process.
Edgar the Bear Stories
By now, you've seen the tree sculpture on Third Avenue (County Hwy H, "Main" Street). The project is complete, with a plaque identifying the bear as "Edgar" with the carving entitled "Water Break." The artist visited the Village Office with another fun idea... Let's put together a book of "The Adventures of Edgar, the Bear." We've got an artist line up to do the illustrations, so all we needed were creative minds of all ages to write little adventures for "Edgar". What is life like for "Edgar"? What kind of adventure did "Edgar" have before his "Water Break"? Does he have hobbies? Does he like sports? What other kinds of animals does he meet as he spends time in the Village? Share your story about a day in the life of "Edgar." The writers used their creativity to share what they liked about living in Edgar through the eyes of "Edgar, the Bear." A group, including the tree sculptor, reviewed the stories and selections will be illustrated and included in the book. Details about the publication are still being worked out. If you have any questions, contact the Village Office at 352-2891. |
